Expanding a major highway through a densely populated region does far more than alter traffic flows—it fundamentally reshapes everyday life and the local economy. This study examines the immediate and long-term impacts of widening National Highway 66 (NH-66) into a six-lane corridor in Kerala’s Thrissur district. Drawing on primary survey data from 120 local residents and commuters, we evaluate the transition from chronic bottlenecks to an infrastructure-led commercial push.
The findings highlight a clear contrast. On one hand, residents view long-term structural outcomes—such as steep property value appreciation and improved regional connectivity—very positively. On the other hand, active construction has created severe operational headaches, notably recurring localized flooding ($61.7\%$) and heavy gridlock along service roads. We conclude with targeted urban design recommendations to minimize localized disruption while building high-capacity transit corridors.
