Title: STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT IN INDIAN PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS USING THE BALANCED SCORECARD: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE BANKING EXCELLENCE
Author: Harwinder Kaur
Abstract: The Indian banking sector has experienced remarkable transformation over the past three decades due to economic liberalization, rapid technological advancement, financial inclusion initiatives, regulatory reforms, and increasing customer expectations. Traditional performance evaluation systems that rely primarily on financial indicators are no longer adequate to measure organizational success in such a dynamic environment. Modern banking institutions require an integrated performance management framework capable of evaluating both financial and non-financial dimensions of organizational performance. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC), introduced by Kaplan and Norton, has emerged as one of the most influential strategic management tools for translating organizational vision into measurable objectives through four interrelated perspectives: financial, customer, internal business processes, and learning and growth. This conceptual paper examines the relevance and application of the Balanced Scorecard in Indian private sector banks. It discusses how the BSC can be utilized to improve strategic planning, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, digital transformation, employee development, innovation, and long-term sustainability. The paper reviews contemporary developments in the Indian banking industry, including fintech disruption, digital banking, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices, and evolving regulatory expectations. Furthermore, it proposes a comprehensive conceptual Balanced Scorecard framework tailored specifically for Indian private sector banks, integrating modern banking performance indicators with strategic management objectives.
