EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN BAYELSA STATE CIVIL SERVICE

Abstract:
This study examines emotional intelligence and employee’s performance in Bayelsa State Civil Service. From the study, self-management a dimension of emotional intelligence was used and employee performance was measured through productivity and creativeness. The research adopts cross-sectional survey with a population of 2,699 and a sample size of 348 was determined using Taro Yamen’s formula. Also, 348 questionaries were distributed to 10 Ministries and 324 were completed and were retrieved. The stratified random probability sampling technique was utilized spearman’s ranked other correlation statistic tool was used to test. The findings indicated the dimension of emotional intelligence (self-management), significantly enhance employee’s performance through productivity and creativeness. The findings also showed a strong relationship exists between self-management and the measures of employee’s performance. The study, therefore, recommends that Mentoring and or coaching employees on the relevance of self-management should be the priority of administrative heads if they want to be productive.
